Introduction to the H07V-K Cable

The H07V-K cable is a single-core, flexible, PVC-insulated wire widely used in electrical installations across South Africa and beyond. Known for its versatility and compliance with stringent international standards, this cable is a go-to choice for internal wiring in equipment, switchboards, and lighting systems. Whether you're an electrician in Johannesburg or a homeowner in Cape Town upgrading your lighting, understanding the H07V-K cable’s specifications and applications can help ensure safe and efficient electrical setups.

Technical Specifications of the H07V-K Cable

The H07V-K cable is designed with precision to meet global safety and performance standards. Below are its key technical details:

  • Conductor: Made of fine bare copper strands, adhering to VDE-0295 Class-5 and IEC 60228 Class-5 standards, ensuring high flexibility and conductivity.

  • Insulation: Special PVC TI1 core insulation, which provides excellent electrical insulation and flame-retardant properties as per IEC 60332.1.

  • Core Colors: Follows VDE-0293 color coding for easy identification during installation.

  • Voltage Ratings: Suitable for working voltages up to 450/750V (alternating current) and test voltages of 2500V.

  • Bending Radius: Both flexing and static bending radius is 12.5 times the cable’s overall diameter, allowing for easy installation in tight spaces.

  • Temperature Range:

    • Flexing: -5°C to +70°C

    • Static: -30°C to +80°C

    • Short circuit: Up to +160°C

  • Insulation Resistance: 10 MΩ x km, ensuring minimal leakage and high safety.

  • Standards and Approvals: Complies with CEI 20-20, CEI 20-52, HD 21.3 S3, CE Low Voltage Directive 73/23/EEC and 93/68/EEC, and is ROHS compliant.

The cable comes in various sizes, from 1.5 mm² (AWG 16) to 240 mm² (500 MCM), with corresponding nominal insulation thickness and overall diameters. For example, a 1 x 1.5 mm² cable has a nominal insulation thickness of 0.7 mm and an overall diameter of 3.1 mm, while a 1 x 240 mm² cable has a 2.2 mm insulation thickness and a 27.1 mm diameter.

Applications of the H07V-K Cable

The H07V-K cable is a versatile wiring solution, but it’s not a one-size-fits-all product. Its design makes it ideal for specific scenarios, particularly in South Africa’s diverse electrical landscape:

  • Internal Wiring: Perfect for wiring inside electrical equipment, distribution boards, and switchboards. For instance, in Durban’s industrial parks, H07V-K cables are commonly used in control panels for manufacturing machinery.

  • Lighting Systems: Suitable for protective laying to lighting fixtures with nominal voltages up to 1000V AC or 750V DC against earth. In Pretoria’s residential areas, these cables are often used in home lighting installations for their flexibility and safety.

  • Fixed Installations: Ideal for installations in closed conduits or under plaster, commonly seen in South African office buildings and shopping centres like Sandton City.

However, the H07V-K cable is not suitable for:

  • Direct laying on cable trays, channels, or tanks.

  • Outdoor or exposed installations without additional protection.

A notable South African case is the use of H07V-K cables in the electrification of informal settlements. In projects like those in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, these cables have been used for safe internal wiring in community centres, ensuring reliable power distribution while meeting strict safety standards.

Advantages of the H07V-K Cable

The H07V-K cable offers several benefits that make it a top choice for electricians and engineers in South Africa:

  1. Flexibility: Its Class-5 copper strands allow for easy bending and installation in confined spaces, such as in the intricate wiring setups of Johannesburg’s high-rise buildings.

  2. Flame-Retardant: The PVC insulation meets IEC 60332.1 standards, reducing fire risks in densely populated areas like Soweto.

  3. Wide Temperature Range: With a static temperature range of -30°C to +80°C, it’s well-suited for South Africa’s varied climates, from the chilly winters of the Free State to the humid summers of KwaZulu-Natal.

  4. Compliance with Standards: Adherence to CE and ROHS directives ensures it meets global safety and environmental requirements, critical for projects funded by international development agencies in South Africa.

  5. Variety of Sizes: Available in a range of cross-sectional areas, from 1.5 mm² to 240 mm², catering to both small-scale residential and large-scale industrial needs.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q1: Can the H07V-K cable be used outdoors in South Africa?
